Clinical Medical Assistant Program- 140 Classroom Hours + 160 Clinical Externship Hour -Section 4520

This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Note: Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Health career Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination. EKG Technician Certification Program  Section 4570

This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT - Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices.

Pharmacy Technician Program   Section 4530

This comprehensive 50 hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, “the top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispersing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. (Textbooks included.)

Restorative Nurse Assistant  Section 4550
Upon successful completion of 16 hours of theory and written tests, lab skills and a field trip to Watsonville Hospital Physical Therapy Department, students earn a Certificate of Competency, as a Certified Restorative Nurse Assistant. This allows the student to work with the physical and/or occupational therapist in the skilled nursing home. An RNA’s job provides: exercise and encouragement to the residents as they learn to perform their own ADL’s. Students must be current state certified licensed nursing assistants or currently enrolled in WASCAE’s Certified Nurse Assistant I Program. 16 CEUs available. (no textbook required).

Health Career Pathways  Section 4100

This is a great opportunity while you are enrolled in your HSE/diploma program to get your foot in the door at Cabrillo College. Cabrillo College offers courses for careers in the Health Fields that have lucrative pay and are meaningful fields for the community. These include Medical Assistant, (a 3 semester course), Radiologic Technology, Dental Assistant, Nursing, and a free certificated class that includes an internship for working as an administrative assistant in a dental office. There will be guest speakers and a tour of the Cabrillo College state of the art health facilities where you will be taking your health career classes. When you obtain your diploma or HSE from Watsonville/Aptos/Santa Cruz Adult Education at graduation you will also receive a certificate of completion for Health Career Pathways.

Acute Care  Section 4540

Upon successful completion of 58 hours of combined theory, lab skills and supervised clinical acute care experience, students earn a Certi cate of Competency, as an Acute Care Certi ed Nursing Assistant. This allows the student to work as an Acute Care CNA in the hospital, sub-acute hospital or Hospice settings. Requirements: Current CNA state license, current American Heart Assoc.-CPR. Current First Aid card. Before clinical: Veri cation of vaccinations for MMR or blood titer. Current PPD or (if positive PPD) current chest x-ray report. Physical and drug testing as required by Watsonville Community Hospital.

Certified Nurse Assistant Program  Section 4700

This program trains students to work as a Certified Nurse Assistant for a skilled nursing facility using the American Red Cross CNA test. Instructor will register and schedule test. Students must pass a basic Reading/Math assessment prior to attending this orientation and must provide a copy of their high school diploma or GED prior to registration. (Books not included). Vocational EL Healthcare-Caregiver Training/VEL Entrenamiento de Enfermeria-Cuidador de Salud  Section 99720

Students will learn the skills and the vocabulary necessary to work as a caregiver. Class Modules include: Infection Control, Patient Care, Nutrition, Human Body, Safety, Transfers, and Commuication. Course curriculum includes First Aid CPR Certification. Prepare for jobs in healthcare and caregiving. Certificates of Completion are awarded upon successful completion of all modules. The class will prepare Beginning High to Intermediate Low EL students with communicative language, expressions and basic directives on how to assist patients and their  families in the home or assisted living environment.
